Pileated Woodpecker and Grain Binder - #0410

farm

The pileated woodpecker is uncommon and local to a mixed forested area. The bird is the lumberjack of the forest as it hammers large rectangular holes into tree trunks in search of insects. The bird is by far the largest of area woodpeckers. The grain binder was used to cut and bind grains into bundles that could be easily handled and stacked into shocks for drying and picked up later for processing.
