"West Siders" - #1901

"West Siders", those who attended Sawyer School on the West side of the  Sturgeon Bay Bridge.  The school, a handsome structure with a magnificent view of the West side of Sturgeon Bay  and the harbor.

From the March 4, 1921 Door County Advocate: Bids for building the school were accepted in the spring of 1921 in the amount of $52,897.92. The school was to include an assembly ‘chamber’ with seating for 112, and to embrace a kindergarten, grade rooms for 1st and 2nd, 3rd and 4th, 5th and 6th, assembly room for 7th, 8th, and 9th grades, an adequate gymnasium with sufficient toilets and a teachers’ retiring room.  The building was to be completed in the fall of 1921.

The school has not been used for years and is now privately owned.
