Door County Bookmobile - #1602

The painting was done for the Egg Harbor Historical Society.  The bookmobile is shown at its visit to the Carlsville School.

Bookmobile service in Door County started in 1950-52 with a three year state funded demonstration project in partnership with Kewaunee County.  In 1953 Kewaunee county voted to discontinue the service while the Door County Board of Supervisors voted to have the Door County Library start its own service that it continued until the fall of 1996. The library on wheels brought the outside world to areas in the county that did not have ready access to books and the education and memories that the books brought to young and old.

The 'walk through' bookmobile traveled the county until the fall of 1989 when a cargo van replaced it and the service became the start of branch libraries.  All traveling library services came to a halt in 1996.  Ralph Arnold, Bob Heilman, and Gary Bellin were the driver/librarians over the years.

In the fall of 2014 the Egg Harbor Historical Society purchased the retired bookmobile and started restoration of the historic vehicle. If you're interested in helping the EHHS bring back many fond memories simply send your contribution to the Egg Harbor Historical Society, Bookmobile Restoration, PO Box 264, Egg Harbor, WI 54209.  Help the Egg Harbor Historical Society “get the wheels turning so we can keep on learning”.
